Amaju Pinnick in company of Caf and FIFA presidents

Amaju Pinnick in contention for key Caf role after FIFA Council election setback

The ongoing shake-up in CAF’s leadership has opened new opportunities for Amaju Pinnick, following his unsuccessful bid for a FIFA Council seat.

With the resignation of Augustin Senghor as First Vice-President and growing frustration among Anglophone federations over their exclusion from FIFA’s governing body, Pinnick’s experience and influence could position him for a strategic appointment.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe faces mounting pressure to restore regional balance, particularly as Anglophone candidates were shut out in the FIFA Council elections.

To address this, CAF is expected to appoint at least two Anglophone vice-presidents, with names like Kurt Okraku (Ghana), Mustapha Raji (Liberia), and Isayas Jira Bosho (Ethiopia) emerging as strong contenders.

However, beyond the vice-presidential appointments, Motsepe also holds the power to directly co-opt two individuals into the CAF Executive Committee—positions often reserved for experienced leaders who narrowly missed out on FIFA roles.

This is where Pinnick faces a key challenge, as he is not the only contender for a co-opted spot. Andrew Kamanga, President of the Football Association of Zambia, who also fell short in his FIFA Council bid, is strongly in the race for the same position.

Given Pinnick’s role in Motsepe’s rise to the CAF presidency and his extensive network within African football, he remains a strong candidate. However, Kamanga’s influence within Southern Africa and growing calls for regional representation could make the battle for the co-opted position highly competitive.

With the leadership structure taking shape, Motsepe’s decisions in the coming days will define his tenure. Whether through vice-presidency selections or co-opted appointments, the inclusion of influential figures like Pinnick or Kamanga could help mend political divides and reinforce CAF’s leadership at a critical juncture.
