Anders Lind makes history at WTT contender Lagos 2026

Denmark’s Anders Lind etched his name into the history books on Sunday after becoming the first player to successfully defend the men’s singles title at the WTT Contender Lagos, while Japan’s Satsuki Odo delivered a masterclass performance to dethrone reigning women’s champion Honoka Hashimoto.

The six-day tournament, held from May 19 to 24 at the Sir Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall inside Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, came to an electrifying close with thrilling finals that showcased elite table tennis at its very best.

Lind successfully retained his crown after overcoming South Korea’s Oh Junsung in an intense five-game battle. Although the Dane secured a convincing 4-1 victory (11-6, 11-9, 11-5, 10-12, 11-8), the scoreline barely reflected the competitiveness of the encounter, with Oh pushing the defending champion throughout the contest.

An emotional Lind praised the Lagos crowd after sealing the historic feat.

“I’m so happy right now. It’s one of the best feelings in the world because you don’t win tournaments every day,” Lind said after the final.

“With these fans, how can I not enjoy it? They were cheering for me, dancing whenever I won points. It warms my heart and gives me extra motivation to fight harder. It’s amazing to play here.”

The Danish star also acknowledged the challenge posed by his Korean opponent.

“It was my first time playing him, so I didn’t really know what to expect. He’s an amazing player, and he showed that in the match. Even though it ended 4-1, it was very close and could have gone either way. His defence and receiving were very solid, so credit to him.”

Lind admitted that making history by defending the title made the triumph even more special.

“Being the first player to retain this title means a lot. Doing something nobody has done before is always difficult, so I’m very proud. Now, let’s try to make it three.”

In the women’s singles final, Satsuki Odo produced one of the standout performances of the tournament to deny compatriot Honoka Hashimoto a successful title defence.

Odo dominated the contest with her aggressive attacking style, cruising to a 4-1 victory (11-3, 5-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-4) to secure her third WTT Series title of the season.

Hashimoto had entered the final in imperious form, having won all her previous matches in straight games and dropping just one game during her title-winning campaign in Lagos last year. But against Odo’s relentless pace and precision, the defending champion struggled to find answers.

The doubles events also produced memorable moments.

India’s Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah claimed the men’s doubles crown with a dominant straight-games victory over Romania’s Iulian Chirita and Andrei Istrate, winning 3-0 (11-7, 12-10, 11-4).

In the women’s doubles final, debut pairing Joo Cheonhui and Reina Aso stunned top seeds Saki Shibata and Hitomi Sato in one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. After losing the opening game heavily, the pair bounced back brilliantly to secure a 3-1 comeback win (1-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-4).

India also celebrated success in the mixed doubles category, as Manush Shah teamed up with Diya Chitale to defeat Samuel Walker and S. Lutz in straight games, 3-0 (11-8, 14-12, 11-8), capping off an impressive outing for the Indian contingent.

From historic title defences to breakthrough performances and stunning upsets, the 2026 WTT Contender Lagos once again delivered a memorable spectacle, with Anders Lind and Satsuki Odo emerging as the standout stars of the tournament.
