Aper Aku Stadium: Benue Assembly orders contract cancellation and EFCC investigation
On Tuesday, the Benue State House of Assembly instructed the Youths, Sports and Creativity Commissioner, Terkimbi Ikyange, to cancel the contract for stadium renovation within seven days. The contract was awarded to Monimichelle Sports Facility Construction and was deemed breached.
The Assembly also directed the Attorney General to take legal action against the contractor to recover funds paid without completing the project. A ruling was given by Speaker Aondona Dajoh after hearing from both the Commissioner and the Attorney General. He expressed frustration that, for the fourth time, the contractor failed to respond to the House and its committees. The Assembly will now contact the EFCC to prosecute Monimichelle for alleged fraud against the state.
The House ordered staff of the Ministry of Works, Housing and Urban Development involved in inflating contract costs to appear before the assembly. Earlier, Commissioner Ikyange reported that the contractor had collected over N1.3 billion but had only completed about 40% of the work. He added that the two-month project deadline had long passed, yet Monimichelle was nowhere to be found.
The Solicitor-General, representing the Attorney General, told the House that since the contractor did not meet the contract terms, the agreement was considered expired. Legally, the only option is to cancel the contract and demand a refund from the contractor.
