Ayuma strikes late to rescue Maritimo in Portugal
Former Flying Eagles midfielder Israel Ayuma produced a dramatic stoppage time equaliser to earn Marítimo a valuable point away to Gil Vicente in the Portuguese top flight on Saturday evening.
Marítimo looked set to leave the Estádio Cidade de Barcelos empty handed after Murilo de Souza put the hosts ahead just seven minutes into the encounter.
However, the visitors refused to surrender and continued to push for an equaliser as the game entered its closing stages.
Their persistence eventually paid off when Ayuma emerged as the unlikely hero deep into added time.
The former Mavlon FC player was introduced in the 66th minute, wearing shirt number 66, and made an immediate impact when the opportunity arrived. Set up by Maurice Boakye, Ayuma produced a clever dummy to wrong-foot his marker before firing the ball into the roof of the net.
It was a composed finish that reflected the instincts of a striker, despite Ayuma operating from midfield. His late intervention secured a hard earned point for Marítimo and capped a determined comeback at the Estádio Cidade de Barcelos.
