Nigeria Collegiate Flag Football League make historic debut in Ikeja

The Nigeria Collegiate Flag Football League (NCFFL), an initiative of the Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA), made history on Saturday as it hosted its first-ever exhibition games at Unique Open University (Ikeja Campus), Agidingbi, Ikeja.

The landmark event featured over 60 student-athletes from four tertiary institutions competing in eight thrilling games before a vibrant crowd of more than 500 spectators. Remarkably, 65% of the athletes were first-time players, while about 25% were graduates of the Nigeria Secondary School Flag Football League (NSSFFL) —proving the strength of NAFA’s grassroots pipeline into collegiate-level competition.

The day ended with Unique Open University emerging as champions, capping a festival of competition, community, and celebration.

A Reward for Excellence

In a surprise highlight, Prof. Chris Imumolen, President and Founder of Unique Open University, awarded the winners a ₦1 million cash prize, calling it “an investment in youth excellence and a way to encourage innovation through sports.” He commended NAFA for introducing a fast-growing global sport to Nigerian campuses and urged student-athletes to seize the platform for both athletic and leadership growth.

Building the Pathway

NAFA President, Babajide Akeredolu, outlined the broader vision of the NCFFL:

“Our goal is clear—we want to build a clear pathway for Flag Football, from secondary schools to universities and into professional opportunities. The NCAA in the U.S. became the talent pool for the NFL; we envision the NCFFL becoming that same pipeline for Nigeria and Africa.”

This pathway is being strengthened through collaboration with the Community Flag Football League (CFFL), whose teams trained the student-athletes for five weeks in preparation for the exhibition.

Voices from the Day

Dr. Emmanuel Okeme, Vice-President of NUGA:

“Watching these students play with such energy and discipline for the first time was inspiring. I am confident that Flag Football will become a key sport in Nigerian universities, and NUGA will support its integration.”

Jesunifemi Tenten, NAFA’s Collegiate Program Coordinator:

“The NCFFL is just one of several programs we are rolling out to expand American football in Nigeria. Today’s event has proven our vision is not just possible—it is already happening.”

A winning athlete from Unique Open University:

“This was my first time playing Flag Football, and I can’t believe we are leaving here as champions. The training and experience opened my eyes to new opportunities through sports.”

The Road Ahead

The NCFFL exhibition marks just the beginning. NAFA has unveiled plans to expand across all six geo-political zones and seven states, targeting 1,000 new student-athletes nationwide. The league’s next major appearance will be at the 2025 NUGA Games in UNILAG, where more schools are expected to participate.

A Timely Global Connection

With Flag Football confirmed for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Nigeria’s early investment in the sport places its student-athletes in prime position to compete on the world stage.

“This was more than an exhibition; it was a movement,” Akeredolu concluded. “And we are only just beginning.”
