CAF boosts prize money for.CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup winners

The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has announced a major increase in prize money for its premier club competitions, with CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe confirming a $2 million boost for the winners of both the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Under the new structure, the winners of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League will earn $6 million, representing a 50 per cent increase, while the champions of the CAF Confederation Cup will take home $4 million a 100 per cent rise.

Since Dr Motsepe assumed office in 2021, the financial rewards in African club football have seen a remarkable upward trajectory. The Champions League winner’s prize has climbed from $2.5 million to $6 million, marking a 140 per cent increase within five years.

Similarly, the Confederation Cup prize money has surged from $1.25 million to $4 million over the same period, a significant 220 per cent rise.

With the latest adjustments, the total prize money and solidarity payments distributed to African clubs now exceed $42 million per season more than double the $18.8 million CAF allocated to clubs in 2021.

Motsepe reiterated CAF’s commitment to strengthening African club competitions and making them globally competitive by providing greater financial support to participating teams.

In August 2024, CAF introduced financial assistance for clubs eliminated in the preliminary rounds of the Champions League and Confederation Cup, awarding each team $50,000. The support was further increased in 2025, with eliminated teams now receiving $100,000.

The financial incentives have already had a noticeable impact, with a record 130 clubs from across the continent participating in the 2025/26 editions of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.
