CAF slams heavy sanctions on Senegal, Morocco after chaotic AFCON 2025 final

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), through its Disciplinary Board, has imposed a series of sanctions on the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF), as well as several players and officials, following multiple incidents that marred the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat, Morocco.

In a statement released in the early hours of Thursday, CAF confirmed that Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has been handed a five-match suspension from CAF competitions and fined $100,000 for unsporting conduct that brought the game into disrepute.

Senegal players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr were also sanctioned, receiving two-match bans each from CAF official matches for their unsporting behaviour towards the referee. The FSF was further hit with multiple financial penalties totalling $600,000 for the improper conduct of its supporters and the unsporting behaviour of its players and technical staff, in violation of CAF’s Disciplinary Code on fair play, loyalty and integrity. An additional $15,000 fine was imposed for the booking of five Senegal players during the match.

On the Moroccan side, CAF suspended captain Achraf Hakimi for two matches, with one of the bans suspended for one year, subject to good behaviour. Midfielder Ismaël Saibari, who was involved in the widely reported “towel-gate” incident, received a three-match suspension and a $100,000 fine for unsporting conduct.

The FRMF was also fined a total of $300,000 for the improper conduct of ball boys, as well as for players who encroached into the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) area and obstructed match officials. In addition, the Moroccan federation was fined $15,000 for the use of laser pointers by supporters during the finals.
