Governor Fintiri unveils Kanu as 2026 Adamawa State Governor's Cup ambassador
Nigerian football icon Kanu Nwankwo is set to play a central role in Adamawa State’s renewed push to discover and develop young football talents following his appointment as ambassador of the 2026 Governor’s Cup.
The initiative, launched in partnership with Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, is designed to take talent discovery beyond the state capital and into communities across all 21 Local Government Areas.
The tournament is expected to provide young players with opportunities to compete, attract scouts and pursue professional careers.
Kanu, a former Super Eagles captain and African Footballer of the Year, brings considerable playing experience and football administration credentials to the project.
His current role as Chairman of Enyimba FC is expected to provide an additional link between the grassroots competition and the professional game.
Speaking on the initiative, Governor Fintiri identified sports as an important component of his administration’s youth empowerment efforts.
He noted that Adamawa possesses significant football talent but that many promising players have lacked the exposure and structures required to progress to higher levels.
With teams drawn from all 21 LGAs, the Governor’s Cup will also create a wider scouting network, with regional matches serving as potential platforms for national and international talent scouts.
Fintiri further expressed optimism that the tournament’s grand finale could coincide with the inauguration of Adamawa’s ultramodern stadium currently under construction.
The partnership between Fintiri and Kanu therefore places grassroots talent discovery at the centre of the 2026 Governor’s Cup, with the competition seeking to create a clearer route from local football communities in Adamawa to the professional stage.
