Eric Chelle demands more as Super Eagles turn attention to AFCON 2025 knockout stage

Eric Chelle refused to be carried away by Nigeria’s 3-1 win over Uganda, insisting the Super Eagles must quickly reset and raise their standards as they prepare for the knockout rounds of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The victory completed a flawless group-stage campaign for Nigeria, but the head coach made it clear that satisfaction must give way to focus, analysis, and hard work on the training ground.

“I’m very happy, of course,” Chelle admitted. “But I have to stay calm. We need to analyse this game and then put the players under pressure in training because they must prepare properly for the next match. At this stage, it’s important to stay focused and humble.”

Chelle also reflected on the encouraging performance of debutant Ryan Alebiosu, who impressed before suffering an injury that may now require medical attention.

“I’m pleased with what he showed,” he said. “But I’m a little worried about his injury. He has a deep cut on his right leg and will go to the hospital. Still, his performance was positive, and it shows that I have many options in this squad.”

Looking ahead to the round of 16, Chelle made it clear that places in the team are still up for grabs, regardless of reputation or previous appearances.

“The door is open,” he said. “But players must prove themselves in training. They are free to show me what they can do there, and if they do their job, I will do mine.”

As Nigeria await their next opponents, Chelle’s message is clear: the group stage is over, and only those who continue to impress will feature when the tournament truly begins.
