Flamingos on step away as Nigeria host Benin in U-17 World Cup Qualifiers
Nigeria's U-17 girls, the Flamingos, will take another significant step towards securing a place at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup when they host neighbours Benin Republic in the first leg of the final qualifying round on Saturday in Ikenne, Ogun State.
With just two matches separating them from another appearance on the global stage, the Flamingos know a strong performance at home could put them firmly in control before the decisive second leg.
Nigeria have looked every inch title contenders throughout the qualifiers. The Flamingos swept aside Guinea with an emphatic 11-0 aggregate victory, showcasing their attacking firepower and defensive solidity. The team created chances with ease, shared the goals across the squad and barely allowed their opponents any meaningful opportunities over both legs.
Rather than easing off after that dominant display, head coach Akeem Busari and his technical crew have kept the squad sharp through an intensive training programme and a series of competitive friendly matches, ensuring the players remain match-ready for the decisive hurdle.
The Flamingos carry the weight of expectation that comes with being one of Africa's most successful youth teams. Their consistency on the continent and their memorable bronze-medal finish at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in India have established them as one of the benchmark teams in African women's youth football.
Captain Harmony Chidi has been at the heart of Nigeria's impressive campaign, scoring five goals in the victories over Guinea while leading the team with maturity and composure. She will once again be expected to spearhead the attack.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi has also emerged as one of the team's standout performers. The creative forward scored three goals against Guinea and has continued to impress in the build-up with her vision, movement and ability to unlock stubborn defences.
Another player to watch is the lively Queen Joseph, whose blistering pace, direct approach and eye for goal make her a constant threat in the final third. Her ability to stretch Benin's backline could prove crucial in Saturday's encounter.
Benin Republic, however, will not arrive in Nigeria merely to make up the numbers. They booked their place in the final qualifying round with a convincing 5-1 aggregate victory over Sierra Leone and will be eager to upset one of the continent's traditional powerhouses.
While Nigeria enter the contest as favourites, knockout football has often shown that reputation alone is never enough. Discipline, concentration and clinical finishing will be key if the Flamingos are to take a valuable advantage into the return leg.
With a place at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco within touching distance, the Flamingos have the opportunity to edge closer to yet another appearance on the world stage and continue their proud tradition of excellence in African youth football.
