Governor Seyi Makinde fulfils 26-year-old promise to 3SC 1998 heroes
In a historic gesture of appreciation and justice, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has approved the allocation of plots of land to the players and officials of the 1998 Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) team. This long-overdue recognition fulfills a promise made 26 years ago by the then Oyo State Military Administrator, Compol Amen Oyakhire, after the team’s outstanding double-title victory.
The 1998 3SC squad etched their names in Nigerian football history by clinching both the Nigeria Premier League title and the WAFU Cup – the only continental trophy won for Nigeria by a club side to date. In recognition of this feat, the players and officials were promised ₦1 million each and a plot of land. While the financial reward was paid, the land allocation had remained unfulfilled for over two decades – until now.
Governor Makinde, known for his people-centric and justice-driven governance, has finally brought closure to this long-standing matter by approving and releasing the plots of land to the team members. His decision not only corrects an administrative oversight but also honors the contributions of those who brought pride to Oyo State and Nigeria at large.
The gesture has been met with joy and gratitude by the surviving players, families of the deceased members, and club officials. They praised the Governor for his commitment to justice, fairness, and recognition of excellence.
“This is not just about land – it’s about respect, remembrance, and fulfillment of promises. Governor Makinde has proven himself as a man of integrity who values sacrifice and service,” said one of the beneficiaries.
The victorious 3SC team was managed under the chairmanship of the late Bode Oyewole and included a mix of homegrown talents and top-tier professionals. The list of beneficiaries includes:
1. Sunday Adu (Captain)
