NPFL,: Chaos after comeback as late Katsina United equalizer spark crowd troubles
What should have been remembered as one of the most thrilling fixtures of the NPFL matchday instead turned into a disciplinary flashpoint after crowd disorder cut short the clash between Wikki Tourists and Katsina United.
The six-goal encounter, filled with momentum swings and individual brilliance, was overshadowed by fan unrest that led to the abandonment of the tie deep into added time.
The Matchday 25 showdown delivered instant drama, with Wikki Tourists striking early through Mairiga in the fifth minute to energize the home crowd. Katsina United responded with determination as Collins drew the visitors level in the 20th minute. Jubrin then restored Wikki’s advantage from the penalty spot seven minutes later, only for Collins to equalize again in the 35th minute, setting the tone for a fiercely contested battle heading into the break.
The second half continued in the same explosive fashion. Ibrahim put Wikki Tourists back in front in the 53rd minute, but the game turned again when Collins completed his hat-trick in the 62nd minute to make it 3–3. That equaliser proved to be the turning point not just on the scoreboard but in the atmosphere around the stadium, as tensions reportedly rose immediately afterward.
Match officials reported that disorder followed the equalising goal, with allegations of an attack on the centre referee leading to the reserve official stepping in. The disruption caused a lengthy stoppage, and after more than 20 minutes of added time had already been played, the match was eventually abandoned.
In the confusion, Katsina United chairman Surajo Malumfashi was reportedly injured during a pitchside incident and taken for medical care. As of the latest updates, both clubs and the NPFL body are yet to release formal statements.
Despite the interruption, the league indicated that the remaining minutes of the fixture are scheduled to be completed at 8:00 a.m. on Monday. On the table, Wikki Tourists remain in the lower half with 28 points from 24 games, while Katsina United hold 10th spot with 33 points though the bigger talking point now is league security and crowd control rather than standings.
