Mohamed Salah's late strike saves Egypt in dramatic win over Zimbabwe
Mohamed Salah struck in stoppage time to spare Egypt an opening-day setback, as the seven-time champions fought back to claim a dramatic 2–1 victory over Zimbabwe in Group B of the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.
Egypt dominated possession for long spells but struggled to turn control into clear chances, leaving them on the brink of frustration before their captain delivered when it mattered most.
Against the run of play, it was Zimbabwe who opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Jordan Jalai burst down the flank before picking out Prince Dube, who spun smartly inside the penalty area and guided a composed finish beyond Mohamed El Shenawy.
Egypt emerged with greater urgency after the break, increasing the tempo and pushing their full-backs higher up the pitch to stretch Zimbabwe’s defensive shape. Omar Marmoush, growing in influence, eventually dragged the Pharaohs level in the 63rd minute, surging down the wing before finishing emphatically to restore parity.
As the clock ticked down, Egypt continued to press, and their persistence was rewarded deep into stoppage time. Salah brought a high ball under control inside the area, slipped past his marker, and finished decisively to spark jubilant celebrations among the Egyptian players and supporters.
Named TotalEnergies Man of the Match, Marmoush reflected on a testing contest. “It was a difficult match. Our start wasn’t the best, but the most important thing is the victory,” he said. “We created many chances and kept a good mindset until the end.”
Egypt coach Hossam Hassan admitted his side were not at their best early on. “We created several opportunities, but in the first half, we were not very focused,” he said. “Zimbabwe’s style frustrated us, but in the second half, we took our chances. I am delighted with the comeback and the impact of our bench.”
Zimbabwe coach Mario Marinica praised his players despite the late heartbreak. “We played a good match and stuck to our game plan,” he said. “The quality of the Egyptian players made the difference. It is disappointing, but we are proud and will push for at least four points from our next two matches.”
