NNL: Beyond Limits FA edge Heartland as Sporting Lagos thrash Solution FC
Beyond Limits FA of Ikenne and Sporting Lagos were the standout performers in Saturday’s Nigeria National League (NNL) fixtures, recording crucial victories to strengthen their promotion ambitions across the conferences.
At the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Beyond Limits ground out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Heartland FC of Owerri to move top of Conference A. The decisive moment came just before the hour mark, when debutant Mark Akpabio announced himself in style, nodding home his first league goal to settle a tense encounter.
After a cagey first half that ended goalless, the home side raised the tempo. Akpabio, handed a starting role on his league debut, rose above the Heartland defence to meet a pinpoint cross from right-back Peter Celestine. The visitors pushed for a late equaliser, but Beyond Limits stood firm to secure all three points, having played out a goalless draw in the reverse fixture.
The victory lifts Beyond Limits to the summit of Conference A with 18 points from ten matches. Elsewhere in the group, Smart City edged Gateway United 3-2, while Crown FC and Sunshine Stars shared the spoils in a 0-0 draw.
In Conference B, Sporting Lagos delivered a ruthless away performance to reclaim top spot, brushing aside hosts Solution FC 3-0 at the Awka City Stadium. Aliyu Baba struck twice to set the tone, before Seun Akanji sealed the emphatic win in the second half, marking a third away victory of the campaign for the Lagos side. Godswill Akpabio United also picked up maximum points with a narrow 1-0 win over Osun United, while Abakaliki FC defeated Stormers 1-0 in Friday’s encounter.
Conference C saw Doma United maintain their lead at the top with a composed 2-0 home victory over City FC. Sokoto United and Lobi Stars battled to a stalemate, while FC Basira claimed a 1-0 win against Kada Warriors. ABS added to the drama in Ilorin with a 2-1 victory over Mighty Jets.
In Conference D, home advantage proved decisive, as Yobe Desert Stars, Jigawa Golden Stars and Bichi First all secured victories against Adamawa United, Gombe United and Kebbi United respectively.
The second stanza of the second-tier league continues on Sunday with more fixtures across the country. At the end of the season, only the Conference winners will earn promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), ensuring the battle for top spot remains fiercely contested.
