NOC Begins Construction of Permanent Secretariat in Abuja, Completion Set for 2027

By Samuel Ahmadu

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has officially commenced the construction of its permanent secretariat in Abuja, a milestone project aimed at strengthening the operational and infrastructural capacity of the organization. The project is scheduled for completion by 2027.

Situated on a 5-hectare site allocated by the Federal Government near the Aviation Village in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the facility will serve as the NOC's headquarters and a central hub for sports development in Nigeria.

The project was formally unveiled on June 11, 2025, during a meeting of the NOC Executive Board, attended by top officials including the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director-General, Bukola Olopade. The visit was led by NOC President, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, OON.

The multi-phase construction will feature a five-story administrative complex, training grounds, and state-of-the-art facilities tailored to various Olympic sports. These are intended to support federations affiliated with the NOC in their preparations for major international competitions, including the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games.

“This project represents a bold commitment to the future of Nigerian sports,” Engr. Gumel stated. “By establishing a centralized, modern secretariat, we are laying the foundation for more efficient operations, stronger federation support, and improved athlete development.”

The secretariat will also serve as a training and development center, hosting workshops, seminars, and pre-competition camps. According to the NOC, the facility is designed to invigorate national sports initiatives, foster inter-federation collaboration, and elevate training standards for elite and grassroots athletes alike.

Key agenda items during the committee's meeting included ongoing National Federation elections, the upcoming OlympAfrica project in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, and preparations for several international events. These include the African Schools Sports Games in Algeria (July 25 – August 5, 2025), and the Islamic Solidarity Games in Saudi Arabia (November 17 – 21, 2025).

The NOC sees this development not only as an infrastructure boost but as a critical step toward ensuring Nigeria's sustained presence and competitiveness on the global sports stage.
