NWFL suspends 2025/26 Premiership after U-20 call ups disrupt squad availability

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has announced the postponement of the ongoing 2025/2026 Premiership season following a formal complaint from one of the participating clubs over the call-up of more than five of its players to the Nigeria U-20 women’s national team.

The decision was taken after the conclusion of Week 7 fixtures, with the league acknowledging that the situation significantly affected the club’s ability to field a competitive squad, raising concerns over fairness and competitive balance.

NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, confirmed the development in an official circular issued to all Premiership clubs.

“The ongoing 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership matches have been placed on hold after the completion of Week 7 fixtures following a formal complaint lodged with the Nigeria Football Federation by one of the participating clubs,” Shabi stated.

She further disclosed that the league will resume with Week 8 fixtures on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, adding that the mid-season break has been limited to one week due to the tight league calendar.

Adjusted fixtures reflecting the revised schedule have already been circulated to all clubs, who have been advised to take note of the changes and ensure strict compliance.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, are currently in camp in Abuja as they prepare for their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying fixture against Senegal.

While national team call-ups remain a positive reflection of player quality and development, the latest development once again underscores the recurring challenge of balancing domestic league commitments with international duties.
