Nasarawa Amazons and Abia Angels secure Super Six tickets after NWFL Premiership Matchday 17
The battle lines in the NWFL Premiership grew sharper on Matchday 17, as Nasarawa Amazons confirmed their place in the Super Six while results across both groups tightened the race for qualification and survival.
In Lafia, Nasarawa Amazons showed grit and championship character, coming from behind to defeat Sunshine Queens 2-1 in a high-stakes encounter. Chigozie Idika stunned the hosts with an early opener in the 10th minute, but Bibiana Odoh turned the game on its head. She struck just before the break to restore parity, then completed her brace six minutes into the second half to seal a vital comeback one that delivered the Amazons’ ninth win of the season and lifted them to 32 points, just two behind Group B leaders FC Robo Queens.
Delta Queens delivered one of the most decisive statements of the round in Asaba, brushing aside Remo Stars Ladies 3-0 to boost their survival hopes. Temitope Titilayo broke the deadlock in the 34th minute, Vweire Samson doubled the lead soon after, and Rita Tsebee put the result beyond doubt late on. For Remo Stars Ladies, the defeat marks a fourth straight game without victory, significantly denting their fading Super Six aspirations.
At the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Dannaz Ladies and Abia Angels settled for a goalless draw an outcome that ultimately favoured the visitors. With other results going their way, Abia Angels remain third in Group B and comfortably secured their Super Six ticket, sitting four points clear of Remo Stars Ladies.
Osun Babes kept their survival hopes alive with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Robo Queens in Ile-Ogbo. Nofisat Tijani’s first-half strike proved decisive, handing them a crucial fifth win of the campaign and keeping them within reach of safety despite the odds.
Ahudiyannem Queens continued their late surge with an impressive 3-0 away win against Confluence Queens in Iyahmo. Mary Lucky stole the spotlight with a first-half brace, making it three consecutive games on the scoresheet, while Loveth Edeh added a third to cap a dominant display. The victory moves them to within two points of fourth-placed Remo Stars Ladies, keeping their ambitions alive heading into the final stretch.
In Group A, Bayelsa Queens maintained their grip at the summit with a composed 2-0 win over Heartland Queens in Yenagoa. Aminat Folorunsho opened the scoring midway through the first half, before Sofiat Bankole wrapped up the points late on.
Rivers Angels were ruthless in Port Harcourt, dismantling Ekiti Queens 4-0 in one of the standout performances of the round. Patience Otubo set the tone early, while Abasiofon Uwah’s brace taking her tally to 10 league goals further underlined her importance. Zainab Oduga added the fourth to complete a commanding display.
Edo Queens, meanwhile, were held to a 1-1 draw by Ibom Angels in Benin City. Esther Inyang gave the hosts the lead shortly after the hour mark, but a late equaliser from Jessica Mark ensured the spoils were shared in a tense South-South contest.
Elsewhere, Adamawa Queens secured a solid 2-0 win over Naija Ratels, with Miracle Isioma Nwakolie and Ifeoma Damian finding the net to seal their sixth victory of the season.
