PDP Moves to Forge Jonathan–Obi Alliance for 2027 Presidential Race

Abuja, Nigeria — Leaders and key stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are reportedly working behind the scenes to broker a political alliance between former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Party insiders say discussions are ongoing to return both politicians to the PDP fold, with the intention of fielding one of them as the presidential candidate and the other as a regional campaign leader.

“If Jonathan emerges as the candidate, Obi would spearhead the campaign in the South-East,” a senior party source told reporters. “On the flip side, if Obi clinches the ticket, Jonathan would be tasked with rallying support across the South-South.”

The source emphasized that the initiative aims to consolidate the PDP’s base and avoid a scenario where both leaders support opposing platforms, which could further fracture the party’s chances in 2027.

“Our leaders are working hard to keep these two influential figures within the PDP structure. The focus now is not just on winning, but on the long-term survival and relevance of the party,” the source added.

Former Jigawa State Governor and senior PDP figure, Alhaji Sule Lamido, appeared to confirm the party's strategic realignment efforts in an interview with the BBC on Wednesday, though he did not provide specific details.

Both Jonathan and Obi have maintained some distance from the PDP in recent years, with Obi running under the Labour Party banner in the 2023 elections. However, PDP insiders believe a united front involving the two could significantly boost the party’s prospects in 2027.
