$7.5m sponsorship deal nears as NPFL targets bigger season

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is on the brink of securing one of the biggest commercial partnerships in its history, with Chairman Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye confirming that a new title sponsor worth over $7.5 million is set to be unveiled ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Speaking in Glasgow, Scotland, Elegbeleye revealed that negotiations with the prospective sponsor are in the final stages, with an official announcement expected before the league's Annual General Meeting scheduled for August 7.

According to the NPFL boss, the partnership goes beyond financial investment, as it is expected to transform the league's digital footprint and boost fan engagement across the country.

"We are putting the finishing touches to the agreement. I travelled abroad to conclude discussions and ensure everything is properly in place. This partnership is not just about sponsorship; it will also strengthen our digital presence through influencers and strategic content creation," Elegbeleye said.

In another major move aimed at increasing the league's popularity, the NPFL chairman disclosed that talks have been held with some of Nigeria's leading entertainers, who have agreed in principle to support the league's promotional campaign.

He explained that the entertainers are expected to attend league matches and use their platforms to help attract more fans to Nigerian domestic football.

"We have spoken with some top entertainers, and we expect to finalise agreements with them soon. They are ready to support the development of Nigerian football and have expressed interest in attending several NPFL matches. Their involvement, alongside our new title sponsor, will give the league greater visibility."

Elegbeleye also announced plans to establish a dedicated social media department comprising experienced sports journalists, digital content creators and young media professionals to tell the NPFL story more effectively and connect with supporters online.

Reaffirming the league's commitment to professionalism, he stressed that the 2026/27 campaign will kick off in August and follow the now-established August to May calendar.

He also urged clubs to complete their licensing requirements before the start of the new season, insisting that the league would maintain high operational standards.

Reports indicate that the proposed title sponsorship deal, valued at over $7.5 million across three years, will rank among the most lucrative commercial agreements ever secured by the NPFL, marking another significant milestone in the league's ongoing growth.
