Ahmed Musa ends international career after 15 years

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has officially announced his retirement from international football, drawing the curtain on a remarkable career that spanned almost 15 years in Nigeria’s green and white colours.

The Kano Pillars forward confirmed the decision in a social media post on Wednesday afternoon, ending a journey that saw him rise from a teenage prospect to one of the most enduring figures in Nigerian football history.

“After a lot of thought, I have decided to retire from international football, bringing to an end almost 15 years with the Super Eagles,” Musa wrote. “From the very first call-up, wearing the green and white meant everything to me.”

Musa’s international story began at a tender age, when he was simultaneously invited to the U-20, U-23, and senior national teams. It was a whirlwind introduction to top-level football, but one he embraced without hesitation.

“I was just a young boy when the journey started,” he recalled. “I was always travelling, still learning, but I never complained. Whenever Nigeria called, I showed up. It was never something I had to think twice about.”

Over the years, that commitment translated into a record 111 caps for Nigeria, making him the most capped player in the country’s history. In that time, Musa scored 18 goals and provided 16 assists, numbers that underline both his longevity and influence in the team.

“Playing 111 matches for my country is something I hold with deep respect,” he said. “To become the most capped player in the history of Nigerian football is a great honour. Every time I wore the jersey, I understood the responsibility that came with it.”

Musa’s career is also defined by iconic moments on the biggest stages. He was part of the Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations under the late Stephen Keshi, a triumph that remains one of the high points of his career. On the global stage, he carved his name into history by becoming the first Nigerian to score more than once in a single FIFA World Cup match, and later the first to score in two different World Cups.

“Winning the 2013 AFCON will always stand out,” Musa said. “That team showed what it meant to play for Nigeria. Scoring at the World Cup, against Argentina and Iceland, are memories I will always carry with me. To score four goals at the World Cup and be Nigeria’s highest goalscorer on that stage is something I am truly grateful for.”

Now 33, Musa closed his farewell message by expressing gratitude to his teammates, coaches, backroom staff, and administrators while reserving special appreciation for Nigerian fans whose support followed him throughout his career.

Although his international chapter has come to an end, Musa remains active at club level. He currently plays for Kano Pillars in the Nigeria Premier Football League, where he also serves as the club’s general manager, continuing his contribution to Nigerian football beyond the national team.
