Babatunde Burknor refutes allegations, moves to sue over defamatory publication
Babatunde Burknor has strongly denied allegations published on September 10, 2025, in an article titled “The Fallacy of ‘Barrister’ Bucknor: A Stain on the University of Abuja’s Name.”
Describing the publication as “malicious and misleading,” Burknor said the claims were fabricated to tarnish his reputation. He added that legal proceedings are already in motion, with the publishers given a 24-hour ultimatum to retract the story or face court action.
According to him, the claim that he is an impostor with no verifiable qualifications is “completely false.” Burknor maintained that he is currently a PhD candidate in Law at the University of Abuja, specializing in International Arbitration and Comparative Criminal Law. His admission, he noted, is backed by an official admission letter from the university’s Postgraduate School.
“The truth is clear,” he said, stressing that no one can gain admission to a PhD in Law without the requisite academic background.
Burknor also rejected accusations that he operates a “fake legal firm” in Gwagwalada or that he sponsored violence against the University of Abuja Student Union Government (SUG). “I have never organized thugs, issued threats, or sponsored violence. I am a man of peace who believes in dialogue and due process,” he stated.
On the land dispute, Burknor clarified that Plot 16, Phase III Neighbourhood Center, Gwagwalada, was lawfully designated by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) as a transit park and legally awarded to Osko Associates under a BOT contract. He said official approvals dating back to 2016 and 2020 confirm the project’s legitimacy. The claim that the land belongs to the University of Abuja, he argued, “collapses under the weight of these approvals.”
He further criticized the role of the SUG, stating that the student body has no jurisdiction over land allocation matters and had been “misled into unnecessary protests.”
Highlighting his profile, Burknor described himself as a businessman, arbitrator, sports promoter, and philanthropist with a record of community development in Gwagwalada. He emphasized that he has no record of criminal conduct and remains committed to legal scholarship and social impact.
“In conclusion, every allegation raised is false,” he said. “My reputation remains intact, and we will put the publishers to strict proof of their claims.”
