Rosemary Chukwuma drawn against Asher Smith, Clayton in Tokyo 2025 World Championships
Nigeria’s Rosemary Chukwuma will begin her campaign in the women’s 100m at the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships with a tough opening heat against Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith and Jamaica’s Tina Clayton.
The 20th edition of the Championships runs from September 13–21, 2025, at the Japan National Stadium.
Chukwuma’s first race comes on September 13, where she will also line up against Ewa Swoboda (Poland), Rani Rosius (Belgium), Lorène Dorcas Bazolo (Portugal), Fayza Issaka Abdoukerim (Togo), Karolína Maňasová (Czech Republic), and Estelle Short (Cook Islands).
Chukwuma will be aiming to progress beyond the heats as the sole representative of Nigeria and book her place in the medal rounds on September 14.
Elsewhere, the women’s 100m promises fireworks with some heavyweight clashes.
Reigning world champion Sha’Carri Richardson (USA) lines up in Heat 3 alongside Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson, the 2023 world 200m gold medallist. Olympic champion Julien Alfred (Saint Lucia) starts in Heat 4, while Jamaican legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the only sprinter with five world 100m titles headlines Heat 7 against Côte d’Ivoire’s Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith.
