FIFA confirms DR Congo for Inter-Continental Playoffs ending Super Eagles World Cup dreams

Nigeria’s hopes of sneaking back into the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were finally extinguished on Wednesday after FIFA confirmed DR Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter-confederation play-off tournament.

In an accreditation notice circulated to journalists ahead of the competition, the world football governing body unveiled the final list of six nations set to battle for the last two tickets to the Mundial. DR Congo’s inclusion effectively shuts the door on Nigeria’s protest and any lingering ambitions of a late qualification route.

The Nigeria Football Federation had challenged the outcome of their November 2025 CAF play-off defeat to the Congolese, alleging that ineligible players featured in the decisive encounter. That tie ended 1-1 before Nigeria fell short in the ensuing penalty shootout. The NFF’s formal appeal sought to overturn the result and secure the Super Eagles’ spot in the inter-confederation play-offs.

However, FIFA’s latest confirmation leaves no room for reconsideration.

“The FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament will see six teams fight it out for the final two places at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, to be staged in Canada, Mexico and the United States across 16 Host Cities,” FIFA stated.

“All of the six teams have now been decided, with Bolivia, Congo DR, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname confirmed as qualifiers.”

The mini-tournament is scheduled to kick off on March 26, with the six teams competing for the final two slots at the expanded 48-team World Cup.

For Nigeria, it marks a painful end to a campaign that promised much but ultimately unraveled at the final hurdle not on the pitch this time, but in the corridors of football administration.
