Lagos Announces Traffic Diversion for Independence, Mekwen Bridge Repairs
The Lagos State Government has revealed a comprehensive traffic diversion plan in anticipation of emergency repairs to the Independence/Mekwen Bridge, which serves the inbound Marina/CMS route. The repairs are set to begin on Wednesday, March 19, and continue until Monday, May 26, 2025.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, outlined the details of the upcoming closures and diversions.
"The Lagos State Government has rolled out a diversion plan ahead of the emergency repairs of the Independence/Mekwen Bridge (inbound Marina/CMS route), scheduled from Wednesday, March 19, to Monday, May 26, 2025," Osiyemi said.
Key sections of the road will be impacted during the repair period.
The stretch from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) through Bonny Camp Bridge to the Independence Bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic.
Additionally, the service lane at the Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge, which leads inbound to Independence Bridge, will be blocked for motorists. However, the service lane linking Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue will remain open for use.
Motorists travelling to Victoria Island from Ahmadu Bello Way will be directed to use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, proceeding to Akin Adesola Street, and then onto Falomo Roundabout. From there, they can connect to Obafemi Awolowo Road and access Ring Road to continue their journey.
For drivers heading toward the 3rd Mainland Bridge, the diversion route will lead them from Ahmadu Bello Way through Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue to Akin Adesola Street, then onto Alfred Rewane Road and Osborne Road, eventually joining Ring Road.
Motorists aiming for Inner Marina and CMS will be rerouted from Ahmadu Bello Way through Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, connecting to Akin Adesola Street, Falomo Roundabout, and Obafemi Awolowo Road, before linking J.K. Randle Road and King George V Road to reach their destinations.
Osiyemi emphasised that vehicles travelling from Inner Marina or CMS to Ahmadu Bello Way would retain access to through-traffic during the repairs.
He urged motorists to comply with the diversion plan and exercise patience, as the partial closure is part of the Federal Ministry of Works’ initiative to rehabilitate the asphalt pavement of the affected road sections.
