Remo Stars crash out of CAF Champions League after defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns
Nigeria’s representative in the CAF Champions League, Remo Stars, have been eliminated by South African heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns following a 2–0 defeat in the second leg of their second preliminary round clash on Sunday.
After suffering a heavy first-leg loss in Abeokuta, the Sky Blue Stars approached the return fixture at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria with a more cautious setup. Head coach Tiago Conde made several changes to the starting lineup, Ahmed Akinyele captained the side from defence alongside Stanley Joseph and Sodiq Oshidero, while Haruna Hadi slotted into midfield. Up front, Joseph Abah and Adam Goita formed a two-man attack.
Remo Stars sat deep and looked to hit on the counter, but their resistance didn’t last long. The home side took control of proceedings, with Nuno Santos and Peter Shalulile, one of the scorers from the first leg, both finding the net to put Sundowns 2–0 up before halftime.
With the tie all but decided, the second half produced few clear-cut chances. Obassa Adeniyi was called into action a few times to deny the hosts, while substitute Samson Olasupo went close for Remo Stars, and Theo Gibson forced a save from Denis Onyango with a long-range effort.
At full time, Mamelodi Sundowns sealed a 7–1 aggregate victory to progress to the group stage of the competition once again. Remo Stars, meanwhile, will shift focus to domestic duties as they prepare to face Kano Pillars in a rescheduled Nigeria Premier Football League fixture on Thursday in Abeokuta.
