Team Nigeria Shines at ITTF Para Championships in Jordan
Team Nigeria delivered a commanding performance at the ITTF World Para Future Championships in Amman, Jordan, finishing among the top three nations with a remarkable medal haul of five gold, seven silver, and two bronze. Competing against 11 other countries including host Jordan, Germany, Iran, Egypt, and South Africa, Nigeria stood out as one of Africa’s leading representatives in the three-day para table tennis event. Veteran star Olufemi Alabi opened Nigeria’s gold rush with a win in the Men’s Singles Class 10, while Faith Obazuaye triumphed in the Women’s Singles Class 9-10. Rising talent Bolawa Akingbemisilu added another gold in the Men’s Class 4-5, with all three finals featuring all-Nigerian showdowns, underscoring the country’s dominance.
The winning continued on the final day, Tuesday, April 15, as the duo of Abiola Adesope and Paralympic legend Tajudeen Agunbiade clinched gold in the Men’s Doubles Classes 14-18, beating their opponents 3-1. Alabi and Obazuaye later returned to secure Nigeria’s fifth gold in the Mixed Doubles Classes 17-18. National coach Nosiru Sule lauded the team’s outstanding display, emphasising the need for increased investment in para sports ahead of major events later this year, including the African and World Championships.
He also acknowledged the critical support from the National Sports Commission (NSC), chaired by Umar Dikko, and Director General Bukonla Olopade, for funding the trip. Egypt managed a single gold through Sayed Youssef in the Men’s Singles Classes 6-7, highlighting Nigeria’s clear superiority among the African nations at the tournament.
The results further solidify Nigeria’s reputation as a powerhouse in para table tennis on the global stage.
