Super Falcons edge Banyana Banyana to reach WAFCON final

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have booked their place in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a dramatic 2-1 victory over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana on Tuesday.

In a tense and high stakes semi-final, the Falcons drew first blood just before the break. Rasheedat Ajibade confidently slotted home from the penalty spot in the 45th minute, giving Nigeria a 1–0 lead heading into halftime.

South Africa suffered an early setback in the 26th minute when key forward Hildah Magaia was forced off due to injury, replaced by Thubelihle Makhubela. Despite the blow, Banyana Banyana came out fighting in the second half and were rewarded in the 60th minute when Linda Motlhalo converted a penalty to level the score at 1–1.

With the game appearing destined for extra time, the Super Falcons produced a moment of magic in stoppage time. Esther Okoronkwo’s clever setup found Michelle Alozie, who made no mistake, burying the winner with a fantastic long-range effort in the 94th minute to send Nigeria into the final.

The match was marked by relentless pace, physical battles, and tactical changes, but Nigeria’s composure and experience ultimately made the difference.

With this victory, the Super Falcons continue their impressive run and move one step closer to reclaiming their crown as queens of African women’s football.
