Tinubu Sends 32 New Ambassadorial Nominees to Senate for Confirmation
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded a new list of 32 ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for screening and confirmation, marking another phase in the administration’s ongoing overhaul of Nigeria’s foreign service.
The list, which includes 15 career diplomats and 17 non-career nominees, was conveyed in two separate letters addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio. It comes one week after the President submitted an initial list of three nominees for ambassadorial postings.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Saturday. He noted that the new batch features a blend of technocrats, former public officials, and political figures. The list also includes four women among the career nominees and six among the non-career nominees.
Prominent figures on the non-career list include former INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu; former presidential aide Reno Omokri (Delta); former Enugu State governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; former Ekiti First Lady Erelu Bisi Fayemi; former Lagos deputy governor Otunba Femi Pedro; and former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode.
Other non-career nominees are Ogbonnaya Kalu (Abia); former Katsina State House of Assembly Speaker Tasiu Musa Maigari; former Plateau commissioner Yakubu N. Gambo; former senator Prof. Nora Ladi Daduut (Plateau); Nkechi Ufochukwu (Anambra); former Oyo First Lady Florence Ajimobi; former Lagos commissioner Lola Akande; former Senator Grace Bent (Adamawa); former Abia governor Okezie Ikpeazu; and businessman and senator Jimoh Ibrahim (Ondo). Ambassador Paul Oga Adikwu, Nigeria’s former envoy to the Holy See, also made the list.
The 15 career diplomats nominated include:
Enebechi Monica Okwuchukwu (Abia); Yakubu Nyaku Danladi (Taraba); Miamuna Ibrahim Besto (Adamawa); Musa Musa Abubakar (Kebbi); Syndoph Paebi Endoni (Bayelsa); Chima Geoffrey Lioma David (Ebonyi); Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim (Ogun); Abimbola Samuel Reuben (Ondo); Yvonne Ehinosen Odumah (Edo); Hamza Mohammed Salau (Niger); Ambassador Shehu Barde (Katsina); Ambassador Ahmed Mohammed Monguno (Borno); Ambassador Muhammad Saidu Dahiru (Kaduna); Ambassador Olatunji Ahmed Sulu Gambari (Kwara); and Ambassador Wahab Adekola Akande (Osun).
According to Onanuga, the nominees—once confirmed—will be deployed to key countries and missions where Nigeria maintains significant diplomatic and strategic interests, including China, India, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, the UAE, Qatar, South Africa, and Kenya. Others will be posted to multilateral institutions such as the United Nations, UNESCO, and the African Union.
Last week, the President had forwarded three other nominees: Ambassador Ayodele Oke (Oyo); Ambassador Amin Mohammed Dalhatu (Jigawa); and retired Colonel Lateef Kayode Are (Ogun). They are expected to fill ambassadorial vacancies in the United Kingdom, the United States, or France.
Onanuga added that more ambassadorial nominations will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
