Arsenal FC edge Corinthians to clinch maiden FIFA Women's Champions Cup

Arsenal Women FC claimed a historic triumph on Sunday, defeating SC Corinthians Women 3–2 after extra time to lift the inaugural FIFA Women’s Champions Cup at the Emirates Stadium.

The European champions made a bright start and took the lead in the 15th minute. Stina Blackstenius forced a defensive error inside the Corinthians box, and Olivia Smith reacted quickest to smash the loose ball past goalkeeper Lele.

Corinthians responded swiftly, drawing level six minutes later. Veteran midfielder Gabi Zanotti rose highest to meet a corner, and although Arsenal goalkeeper Anneke Borbe got a hand to her header, she could not keep it out. The sides remained locked at 1–1 for the rest of the first half, with Borbe producing a fine save to tip Duda Sampaio’s powerful effort over the bar.

Arsenal regained control after the interval and went back in front in the 59th minute. Emily Fox delivered a pinpoint cross from the right, which Lotte Wubben-Moy met with a well-directed header into the bottom corner, leaving Lele rooted.

The Brazilian champions pushed hard for another equaliser, but Borbe proved decisive again, denying Johnson in a one-on-one situation. Arsenal nearly sealed the game late in regulation time when Beth Mead’s effort was blocked and Caitlin Foord rattled the crossbar with the rebound.

Drama followed in stoppage time as Corinthians were awarded a penalty after Katie McCabe fouled Gisela Robledo in the box. Vic Albuquerque kept her composure to convert from the spot and force extra time.

Arsenal found the decisive goal in the 104th minute. Frida Maanum intercepted a loose pass, surged forward, and slipped the ball to Caitlin Foord, who curled a composed finish inside the near post beyond Lele. Corinthians threatened once more late on, with Robledo firing narrowly wide from distance in the 117th minute, but Arsenal held firm to secure a memorable 3–2 victory.

The win earns Arsenal a prize of $2.3 million, while runners-up Corinthians take home $1 million. Maanum was named Player of the Tournament, with Borbe honoured as Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

Earlier in the third-place match, Gotham FC cruised to a 4–0 win over ASFAR Rabat. Khyah Harper, Savannah McCaskill, Jaedyn Shaw (penalty), and Midge Purce were all on target as both semi-finalists received $200,000 each.
