D'Tigers finish fifth as Angola claim record 12th Afrobasket title
Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, wrapped up their 2025 FIBA AfroBasket campaign in fifth place after the 13-day tournament concluded in Angola on Sunday.
The hosts, Angola, delivered a dominant performance throughout the competition, capping it off with a 70–43 victory over Mali in the final. The win not only gave them their 12th continental crown but also made them the most successful team in AfroBasket history. Remarkably, they achieved the feat with a flawless 6-0 record, the win is their first African title since 2013 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
For D’Tigers, it was their 20th AfroBasket appearance, but their run ended at the quarterfinal stage following a 91–75 defeat to Senegal, who later secured bronze. Led by coach Mohammed Abdulrahman, Nigeria started strong, topping Group B with wins over Madagascar, Tunisia, and Cameroon in the round-robin phase.
Though they fell short of a podium finish, the 2015 champions did enough to secure fifth spot overall, behind Angola, Mali, Senegal, and Cameroon. Egypt placed sixth, while Ivory Coast and Cape Verde completed the top eight.
Attention now shifts to November, when D’Tigers regroup for the FIBA Men’s World Cup Qualifiers as they chase a spot at the 2027 edition in Qatar, having missed out in 2023.
