D'Tigress dominate Cameroon to book Afrobasket semi final spot

African champions Nigeria D’Tigress stormed into the semi-finals of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket with a commanding 83–47 win over Cameroon on Thursday night in Abidjan.

The D’Tigress, will now face rivals Senegal in a much-anticipated semi-final clash.

Despite a fast start from Cameroon, who opened the game with a 4–0 run, Nigeria quickly flipped the script. Led by Coach Rena Wakama, the D’Tigress responded with a 7–0 burst and never looked back.

Fatigue was evident in the Cameroonian side, who had just come off a physically taxing late-night qualifier against Angola. Nigeria’s depth and defensive intensity proved too much to handle.

By halftime, it was all D’Tigress. They led 36–18, powered by a dominant showing from Amy Okonkwo, who racked up 15 points and five rebounds before the break.

Off the bench, Victoria Macaulay provided an extra spark, holding her own in the paint and delivering on offense.

By the end of the third quarter, Nigeria had widened the gap to a massive 66–31 lead, putting the game well out of reach.

Okonkwo finished with 18 points, six rebounds, and one assist. Point guard Ezinne Kalu pulled the strings with poise, recording five assists. Nicole Enabosi added 12 points, three rebounds, and two assists, while Macaulay contributed 12 points, four rebounds, one assist, one steal, and two blocks. Elizabeth Balogun also impressed, chipping in 11 points, five rebounds, a steal, and a block.

With the win, Nigeria, along with Mali, Senegal, and South Sudan, have not only reached the final four but also secured their places in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournaments scheduled for March.

They’ll join 20 other nations from across the globe in the qualifying series, including Brazil, Argentina, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Colombia from the Americas.
