Esther Okoronkwo delivered a statement performance to kick off the 2026 Northern Super League season, scoring the decisive goal and providing an assist as AFC Toronto rallied to a thrilling 3–2 comeback win over defending champions Vancouver Rise FC.
Leading the line in her new No. 9 shirt, the Super Falcons forward, was at the heart of everything for Toronto at Swangard Stadium on Friday night, influencing all three goals in a display that underlined her attacking importance.
Toronto struck first in the 8th minute, with Okoronkwo playing a key role in the buildup. The Nigerian forward showed composure to control a throw-in before linking up neatly with Sarah Stratigakis, whose low cross was calmly finished by Zoe Burns.
However, the hosts responded with intent. Maria Camila Reyes restored parity in the 18th minute, and just before the break, Latifah Abdu fired Vancouver ahead to hand the champions a 2–1 lead at half-time.
Toronto emerged for the second half with renewed purpose, and Okoronkwo once again provided the spark. In the 61st minute, she delivered a precise ball into a dangerous area from a set-piece, picking out Stratigakis, who rifled home emphatically to level the score and swing momentum.
The turnaround was completed in the 72nd minute, and fittingly, Okoronkwo applied the finishing touch. Burns’ corner caused confusion in the box, and after a deflection, the ball fell kindly to the Nigerian forward, who reacted quickest to stab home from close range.
Her all-action display earned her Player of the Match honours, capping a memorable opening night for both player and club.
AFC Toronto will now turn attention to their first home fixture of the campaign, welcoming Halifax Tides to BMO Field on May 3.
