Grasshoppers, Rivers Queens share spoils as Ardova Handball League heats up in Benin City
Former Nigerian champions Grasshoppers of Owerri and Rivers Queens battled to a thrilling 23-23 draw on Day Two of the first phase of the ongoing Ardova Handball Premier League in Benin City, Edo State.
Rivers Queens took control early, going into halftime with a 13-8 lead. However, the resilient Grasshoppers clawed their way back in the second half to salvage a well-earned point.
In other women’s category matches, Plateau Peacocks outclassed Ekiti Queens 37-18, having led 18-11 at the break.
The men’s fixtures also delivered action-packed moments. Rima Strikers edged Adamawa Warriors 27-23, Niger United overcame Lagos Seasiders 30-25, and Safety Shooters secured a 26-22 victory over Benue Buffaloes.
Despite suffering back-to-back defeats, Ekiti Queens’ head coach, Ayo-Idowu Kayode, remains optimistic about his team’s campaign. The debutants were handed a heavy 59-29 loss by Safety Babes on opening day and followed it up with another tough result against Plateau Peacocks.
Still, Kayode, who has coached this team from the U-12 level, is focused on the bigger picture.
“The experience we’ve gained in just two days is invaluable,” he said. “This is my first time coaching at this level, and it's also the first time my players are competing in the elite league.”
He acknowledged the intensity and quality of the competition, noting that the tournament has been an eye-opener, not just for his players and himself, but also for Ekiti State, which has traditionally invested more in football.
“The standard of play is high. It’s beautiful to see how teams are tactically adapting and fiercely contesting every game. We’re learning fast, and we believe we’ll make our mark,” Kayode added.
As the league continues, all eyes will be on these young sides and seasoned contenders alike, with plenty of drama and skill still to unfold in Benin City.
