D'Tigress star Murjanatu Musa waived by Phoenix Mercury

D’Tigress centre Murjanatu Musa will no longer suit up for the Phoenix Mercury after the WNBA franchise waived her on Tuesday to make room for veteran forward DeWanna Bonner.

The 25-year-old Nigerian, who joined the Arizona-based side earlier this year from French Ligue Féminine outfit Tarbes Gespe Bigorre, featured sparingly under head coach Nate Tibbetts. She was primarily a squad rotation player during her time with the team.

Musa made her WNBA debut on May 22 in the Mercury’s narrow 89–86 win over the Los Angeles Sparks. She went on to appear in 12 games during the 2025 season, averaging 3.3 points and 2.6 rebounds per game while shooting an efficient 45.7% from the field.

Her progress was stalled by a right ankle injury that sidelined her for three consecutive games. Although she was expected to return in Monday’s blowout win against the Dallas Wings, she remained on the bench, fueling speculation about her future with the team.

Those rumours were confirmed when the WNBA transactions page listed Musa as officially waived. The Mercury, who had already reached the league’s 12-player roster limit, needed to clear a spot to accommodate Bonner’s arrival. Notably, six players on Phoenix’s roster are signed to unprotected contracts, making them eligible to be released without cap penalties before the July 13 deadline.

Despite her short stint in the WNBA, Musa’s defensive presence and passing ability could earn her another opportunity with a different franchise.
