Joy Omewa stays red hot as Nigerian Stars shine across Europe

 

 

Nigerian players abroad delivered another weekend of standout performances, headlined by Joy Omewa’s red-hot form in England and Regina Otu’s milestone strike in Turkey.

 

At the City Ground, Omewa continued to underline her importance to Nottingham Forest Women, scoring in back-to-back games as they edged Durham Women 2–1 in the Women’s Super League 2 on Sunday. The striker showed sharp instincts in the 14th minute, reacting quickest at the back post to turn home a loose ball after Cerys Brown’s delivery slipped through the goalkeeper’s grasp. It was her third goal for the club and a growing statement of intent.

 

Forest doubled their advantage just six minutes later through Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah before Lily Agg pulled one back for Durham in the 30th minute, setting up a tense finish that the hosts managed to see out.

 

In the top flight, Chiamaka Nnadozie once again proved why she remains one of Africa’s finest goalkeepers. The three-time CAF Goalkeeper of the Year produced a composed display to keep a clean sheet against Leicester City, bringing her tally to six for the season joint second-best in the Barclays Women’s Super League, just one behind Chelsea’s Hannah Hampton.

 

Meanwhile, in Turkey, Regina Otu etched her name into Fenerbahçe Women’s history books. The midfielder netted the club’s 100th league goal of the season in a commanding 3–0 win over Amed SK Women, striking in the 14th minute to register Fenerbahçe’s second of the game. The victory marked their 21st of an unbeaten campaign, with compatriot Flourish Sabastine also featuring as the Istanbul side maintained their relentless march.

 

In France, Jennifer Echegini played a decisive creative role for Paris Saint-Germain Féminine, providing the assist for Sakina Karchaoui’s goal in a 2–1 win over Nantes. Rasheedat Ajibade added energy off the bench after coming on in the 71st minute, helping PSG hold firm for all three points.

 

Over in Saudi Arabia, Francisca Ordega was instrumental in Al Ittihad Women’s comeback 2–1 victory against Al Qadsiah Women, setting up Leticia Nunes for the opener before a late winner sealed the turnaround after Adriana had levelled proceedings.

 

For Asisat Oshoala, it was a bittersweet outing. The six-time CAF Women’s Player of the Year registered an assist in Al Hilal Women’s 4–1 defeat to Al Nassr, setting up Ghizlane Chebbak. The result, however, confirmed Al Nassr as champions of the 2025/2026 season. Oshoala’s contribution took her tally to 20 goal involvements across all competitions this season 16 goals and four assists.

 

Away from the action, Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre continues her recovery journey after undergoing successful surgery on her left foot, with rehabilitation now the next step in her return to fitness.

 

From England to Turkey, France to Saudi Arabia, Nigerian stars once again left their mark delivering goals, assists, and milestones in a weekend that reinforced their growing influence across the global game.
