NDDC aims to create equal chances via NDSF, say Boma Iyaye
The Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) is a Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) initiative. It is designed to include all regional youths, regardless of gender or ability.
Alabo Boma Iyaye, Executive Director of Finance and Administration, explained this intent. He stated on ARISE television that it aligns with global inclusion practices in sports and life.
Iyaye clarified why Para-Athletics and Para-lifting were included in the 17-sport event. He noted that regional youths with disabilities should benefit from NDDC's work.
Iyaye, also Chairman of the NDSF Main Organising Committee (MOC), commented on international standards. He mentioned the Paralympic Games, organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This event caters to people with disabilities. The Niger Delta Sports Festival mirrors these practices.
Iyaye discussed NDDC's decision to support sports. He highlighted sports as a tool for national unity. "We aim to provide a platform for youths from the nine NDDC states," he stated. "This will enable them to connect, learn about each other, and showcase their talents."
"There is a need to renew the supply of athletes for Nigeria," he added. "This festival offers a chance to find and nurture new talent." These athletes could follow in the footsteps of Blessing Okagbere and others.
Since its founding in July 2000, NDDC has focused on infrastructure. This includes roads, healthcare, education, and skills training.
Iyaye said sports would offer an alternative career path. This benefits those who may not succeed in education or trades.
The Niger Delta Sports Festival begins with local trials. The main event will occur in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, from April 1-8. Around 3000 athletes will compete in 17 sports.
