NPFL slams heavy sanction on Kano Pillars
It has been a season filled with excitement and quality football, but the ugly scenes that unfolded in Kano on Sunday have cast a shadow over the campaign. The highly anticipated fixture between Kano Pillars and Shooting Stars ended in chaos after violent scenes erupted at the Sani Abacha Stadium.
Pillars had taken the lead in the game, but a late equalizer from the in-form Oluyole Warriors secured a valuable point for the visitors. Unfortunately, what should have been a thrilling end to an entertaining contest quickly turned sour as home fans invaded the pitch after the final whistle, attacking match officials and Shooting Stars players.
In response, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has handed down heavy sanctions to Kano Pillars for breaching multiple sections of the league’s Framework and Rules. The club was found guilty of failing to provide adequate security, allowing unauthorized persons onto the pitch, and not controlling their supporters, whose actions brought the game into disrepute.
As a result, Kano Pillars have been docked three points and three goals from their accrued total. The club has also been hit with a series of fines totaling ₦9.5 million, broken down as follows
₦1 million each for failing to provide adequate security, throwing dangerous objects, failing to control supporters, and misconduct capable of bringing the game to disrepute, ₦4 million total.
₦2 million for the assault on Shooting Stars players and match officials.
₦2 million as compensatory payment for treatment and damages suffered by Shooting Stars players and match officials.
₦1.5 million as compensation to the match officials (₦250,000 each).
In addition, the NPFL has ordered that Kano Pillars play their home games in Katsina for the rest of the season — or at least for ten matches, pending proof that such incidents will not recur. The Sani Abacha Stadium will remain closed to Pillars’ home fixtures until further notice.
The club has also been directed to identify and prosecute the perpetrators of the attack and to submit an effective matchday security plan to the NPFL within seven days.
Kano Pillars have 48 hours to either accept the summary jurisdiction or appeal the decision.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with many calling for stricter enforcement of disciplinary measures to protect players, officials, and the image of Nigerian football.
