King Mohammed VI inaugurates International University Hospital Complex in Rabat

His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, accompanied by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, on Monday presided over the inauguration of the Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex in Rabat — a state-of-the-art medical facility designed to deliver world-class healthcare accessible to all citizens and to serve as a leading center for medical education and research.

On this occasion, His Majesty also gave His High Instructions for the opening of the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir, a new medical hub of excellence that will significantly enhance healthcare delivery and medical training in the Souss-Massa region.

Developed by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health, the Rabat complex stands as a landmark of innovation and compassion — embodying the King’s vision for equitable access to quality healthcare and his commitment to the well-being of citizens.

The project spans 280,000 m² and consists of two main entities:

The Mohammed VI International University Hospital of Rabat (190,000 m²).

The Mohammed VI University of Health and Science of Rabat (90,000 m²).

The hospital, with an initial capacity of 600 beds, expandable to 1,000, houses over 30 centers of excellence in disciplines such as robotic surgery, neurosurgery, interventional cardiology, oncology, radiotherapy, and precision medical imaging.

It includes 24 advanced operating rooms, 143 intensive care beds, and features some of the most sophisticated medical technologies available in Africa, including:

The first PET-MRI scanner in Morocco and Africa

A 3 Tesla Omega MRI system

A robotized hospital pharmacy

A simulation center

The first fully automated laboratory platform and digital pathology lab in Africa

Specialized units for severe burns, as well as hyperbaric and hypobaric oxygen therapy services — unique in Morocco — further underscore the hospital’s comprehensive approach to patient care.

The adjoining Mohammed VI University of Health and Science is equipped with 15 amphitheaters (4,000 seats) and facilities for 8,000 students across various disciplines including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary sciences, biomedical engineering, and nursing.

The entire complex is built to the highest environmental standards, earning HQE “Excellent” certification. It integrates 8,800 m² of solar panels, covering over 10% of its energy needs and reducing carbon emissions by 40%.

The Mohammed VI University Hospital of Agadir, built on 30 hectares with a total investment of 3.1 billion dirhams, represents another major step in Morocco’s healthcare modernization. The facility offers 867 beds, 19 operating theaters, specialized units for cardiology, radiology, and mother-child health, and the first 3D robotic surgery technology in Africa.

Its cutting-edge infrastructure — including two catheterization rooms, intensive care units, a complete sterilization center, and a robotized drug distribution system — ensures the highest standards of patient safety and efficiency.

Serving nearly 3 million people, the hospital is set to boost medical access in southern Morocco, create thousands of jobs, and contribute to the country’s broader socio-economic development.
