Nigeria storm Gaborone with renewed relay unity and mental ambitions

Nigeria’s charge toward global relay relevance has gathered momentum as its six teams settle into Gaborone ahead of the highly anticipated World Athletics Relays scheduled for May 2–3.

Rather than arriving as underdogs, the Nigerian contingent has stepped onto the scene with quiet confidence, determined to rewrite its relay narrative on one of athletics’ most competitive stages.

What stands out in the Nigerian camp is not just speed, but cohesion. Across the men’s and women’s 4x100m, 4x400m, and mixed relay events, athletes have embraced a collective mindset, sharpening baton exchanges and building rhythm in training.

The focus has shifted from individual brilliance to synchronized execution an approach that often separates finalists from champions in elite relay competitions.

Behind the scenes, a strong wave of administrative backing has further strengthened the team’s resolve. The presence of National Sports Commission Director General, Bukola Olopade, alongside Athletics Federation of Nigeria President, Tonobok Okowa, signals a unified front.

Adding experience and mentorship is former AFN boss Solomon Ogba, whose influence continues to resonate within Nigerian athletics.

This blend of technical preparation and institutional support has created a sense of belief within the squad. For the athletes, it’s more than just another meet it’s an opportunity to prove Nigeria’s relay pedigree against sprinting giants like the United States, Jamaica, and Great Britain.

With qualification stakes high and global attention fixed on Botswana, Nigeria’s mission is clear: deliver clean races, maximize every exchange, and convert preparation into podium finishes.

In Gaborone, the story isn’t just about participation it’s about a nation ready to sprint back into global relay prominence.
