Flamingos Soar with Consecutive Friendly Wins Ahead of U17 Women’s World Cup
Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, sent a strong message of intent as they cruised to back-to-back friendly victories in Abuja, sharpening their claws for next month’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
On Friday, September 12, the girls in green outclassed Horvel Angels 2–0. Chisom Nwachukwu pounced on a goalkeeper’s blunder to break the deadlock, before Kaosara Olanrewaju sealed the result with a composed second-half strike.
Barely 24 hours later, the Flamingos turned on the style, dismantling Nazareth Angels 5–0 in a one-sided contest. After storming to a 2–0 first-half cushion, Itodore Destiny stretched the lead shortly after the restart. Terlumu Tabitha added a fourth, while the lively Nwachukwu grabbed her second goal of the weekend to complete the rout. Despite a flurry of missed chances, the team’s attacking firepower was on full display.
With the World Cup kicking off October 17 to November 8 in Morocco, the wins underscore the Flamingos’ growing confidence, cutting edge, and defensive discipline. Drawn in a tricky Group D alongside Canada, France, and Samoa, the Nigerian side is showing signs of readiness.
Head coach Bankole Olowookere now has a full camp at his disposal, as the technical crew ramp up preparations and fine-tune strategies for the global challenge ahead.
