Lawal smashes Commonwealth Games records to retain women's 58kg weightlifting

 

 

Nigeria's Rafiatu Folashade Lawal delivered a sensational performance to successfully defend her Commonwealth Games women's 58kg weightlifting title, producing a record-breaking display to claim the gold medal.

 

Lawal dominated the competition from start to finish, setting new Games and Commonwealth records in all three categories. 

 

She lifted 103kg in the snatch, 126kg in the clean and jerk, and finished with a total of 229kg, with each mark establishing both a Games Record (GR) and Commonwealth Record (CR).

 

The Nigerian champion finished an emphatic 14kg ahead of Canada's Ann-Sophie Taschereau, who claimed silver with a total lift of 215kg.

 

Lawal's commanding victory secured Nigeria's sixth gold medal of the Commonwealth Games, further cementing her status as one of the country's finest weightlifters. Her flawless performance highlighted her dominance in the women's 58kg category and added another remarkable chapter to Nigeria's success at the Games.
