OFFICIAL: Tosin Demehin signs three-year deal with SL Benfica, reunites with Super Falcons duo
Nigeria defender Oluwatosin Demehin has completed her move to Portuguese champions Benfica, signing a three-year contract that will keep her at the club until June 2029.
The 24-year-old centre-back joins Benfica as a free agent following the end of her two-year spell with Turkish giants Galatasaray, where she established herself as a key figure in the club’s defence.
Demehin moved to Galatasaray from French side Stade de Reims in September 2024 after spending two seasons with the French club. She made 41 appearances across all competitions for Galatasaray and played a significant role in the club’s historic first UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign.
The move to Benfica will see Demehin reunite with fellow Super Falcons international Flourish Sabastine, with whom she previously shared the dressing room at Stade de Reims in France. Sabastine has since moved to Benfica, setting up another reunion between the two Nigerians after Demehin’s subsequent transfer to Turkey.
Demehin will also link up with Janet Akekoromowei, giving Benfica a strong Nigerian presence as the club prepares for another demanding domestic and European campaign.
One of Demehin’s standout moments during her time in Turkey came in the Istanbul derby against Fenerbahçe, when she scored in Galatasaray’s thrilling 3-2 victory over their city rivals.
The Nigerian international expressed her appreciation to Galatasaray in a farewell message, thanking the club’s management, teammates and supporters for their support throughout what she described as an important chapter of her career.
Her switch to Benfica represents another significant step in Demehin’s European career. At the Portuguese champions, she will have the opportunity to compete for domestic honours and continue gaining experience at the highest level of women’s club football.
With her reunion with Sabastine adding another Nigerian connection to the Benfica squad, Demehin will now turn her attention to settling into her new surroundings and making an immediate impact as the Portuguese champions prepare for the new season.
