Super Falcons star breaks silence after racist reaction to hotel theft report
Nigeria forward Esther Okoronkwo has responded with a message of unity and resilience after racist comments surfaced online following reports that members of Nigeria’s squad were allegedly robbed during their stay at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco.
The reaction came after news emerged that some Super Falcons players had alleged that more than $1,250 was stolen from their wallets while the team was lodged at the hotel. As the story gained traction on social media, some users responded with racist and xenophobic remarks directed at the Nigerian team.
Rather than engage with the abuse, Okoronkwo took to her Instagram story to preach love and togetherness, quoting the late American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
“Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. We move forward with pride, unity, and determination. See you on the pitch 🇳🇬⚽.”
The forward’s post has been widely interpreted as a response to the online hostility that followed the theft allegations, with many fans praising her decision to rise above the insults and keep the team’s focus firmly on football.
Despite the off-field distraction, the Super Falcons remain determined to maintain their concentration as they continue their preparations, with players and officials hoping the investigation into the alleged theft reaches a satisfactory conclusion.
Okoronkwo’s message also served as a rallying call for Nigerian supporters, emphasizing solidarity and resilience while reinforcing the team’s commitment to letting their performances on the pitch speak louder than the negativity surrounding them.
Nigeria begin the defence of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title against debutants Malawi on Tuesday, July 28, in Rabat. The nine-time African champions will then face Zambia before concluding their Group B campaign against Egypt as they seek a record-extending 10th continental crown.
