WAFCON 2026: Tanzania stun 2022 champions South Africa as Cote D'Ivoire cruise to opening win

 

 

2022 champions South Africa endured a shocking start to their WAFCON 2026 campaign after with a 2–1 defeat to Tanzania in their Group B opener.

 

Tanzania made history by claiming their first-ever victory over Banyana Banyana at the tournament, taking the lead in the 38th minute through Msewa. South Africa responded just before halftime, with Bambanani Mbane heading home the equaliser in first-half stoppage time.

 

With the match seemingly headed for a draw, Tanzania struck a dramatic late winner to seal all three points and produce one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far.

Côte d’Ivoire kicked off their WAFCON 2026 campaign in style with a commanding 4–1 and secure a comfortable win. Burkina Faso pulled one back but struggled to contain Côte d’Ivoire victory over Burkina Faso in another Group B encounter.
