AFN invites 29 athletes to camp ahead of 2026 Commonwealth Games

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has unveiled a 29-athlete provisional camp list as preparations gather momentum for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, scheduled for July.

A total of 14 male and 15 female athletes have been invited to the National Sports Commission's Commonwealth Games training camp in Abuja, where they will begin intensive preparations for the multi-sport event.

The selection was largely based on performances at the recently concluded National Trials held at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Sports Complex in Lagos, while a number of athletes were also considered based on their current performances and rankings after being unable to attend the trials due to visa-related challenges.

AFN Secretary-General Israel Inwang confirmed that all invited athletes are expected to report to the NSC National Commonwealth Games camp in Abuja from Thursday, June 25, 2026.

Nigeria’s athletics contingent is expected to compete in 18 track and field events at the Games, including three relay events, the men’s 4x100m relay, women’s 4x100m relay, and the mixed 4x400m relay.

With the countdown to Glasgow underway, the Abuja camp will provide the athletes with a crucial opportunity to fine-tune their preparations as Nigeria aims for a strong showing on the Commonwealth stage.
